Application of TSN

TSN has various application areas, verticals. Profile standard has been or is being specified for some of them to describe which TSN standards to use and how. A TSN profile selects features, options, configurations, defaults, protocols, and procedures of bridges, end stations, and LANs to build a bridged network for the given TSN application. Further application cases of TSN are described below.

Aerospace

The IEEE P802.1DP TSN for Aerospace project will specify profiles for designers, implementers, integrators, and certification agencies of deterministic IEEE 802.3 Ethernet networks that support a broad range of aerospace onboard applications including those requiring security, high availability and reliability, maintainability, and bounded latency.

The intent is to develop 802.1DP jointly with SAE Avionics Networks AS-1 A2.

Audio Video Bridging (AVB)

The IEEE Std 802.1BA-2011 Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Systems standard describes how to build a bridged network to meet the requirements of audio-video streams. 802.1BA is successfully deployed for various applications today, e.g., professional audio and video studios, and automotive infotainment.

Automotive

TSN is an enabler of the application of Ethernet networks within a car as summarized in this flyer. This tutorial provides further information on the application of Ethernet to automotive. The 802.1DG TSN Profile for Automotive In-Vehicle Ethernet Communications will describe guidelines for the selection and the use of IEEE 802 standards for automotive in-vehicle Ethernet networks.

Industrial automation

IEC and IEEE 802 have a joint project to specify the use of TSN for industrial automation. The IEC/IEEE 60802 TSN Profile for Industrial Automation will  selection and specify the use of IEEE 802 standards and features in order to be able to deploy converged networks to simultaneously support operations technology traffic and other traffic. A flyer gives an overview of the potential of TSN to industrial automation, i.e., TSN is an enabler of Industry 4.0.

Cellular fronthaul networks

Fronthaul connects a cellular network’s radio equipment to their remote controller. The IEEE Std 802.1CM-2018 Time-Sensitive Networking for Fronthaul profile specification describes how to build a fronthaul bridged network to meet the stringent requirements of the fronthaul flows. The profile specification has been amended by IEEE Std 802.1CMde-2020 to refine the base profile to provide enhancements for synchronization and for 5G mobile networks.

Utility

The ongoing IEC TR 61850-90-13 work is to provide Deterministic Networking in Power Automation. A white paper has been prepared on Utility Applications of Time-Sensitive Networking.
